Pendleton Place Children’s Shelter

Pendleton Place Children’s Shelter was the latest recipient of an AFL ACT (AFL Community Team) volunteer community service event. Sixteen volunteers, including friends and family, gathered at Pendleton Place’s Smith House Friday, and again Saturday morning, to paint four bedrooms and the upstairs and downstairs hallways. At the end of the project, AFL volunteers presented Pendleton Place Children’s Shelter with a grant for $3,000.

“Participating in events such as these provides a very clear perspective of what takes place in our community,” stated Greg Pickeral, product manager for AFL and ACT volunteer. “Once you get involved, you really have the opportunity to see the needs that are out there. This project was very fulfilling – by the end of the project, I felt that we were able to make a difference for Pendleton Place and the children that reside there.”

Lowe’s of Greenville donated the paint and painting supplies and volunteers provided tools from their homes to complete smaller tasks.

“We really appreciate the work that AFL has done with this project,” stated Brandon Blake, community outreach manager for Pendleton Place Children’s Shelter. “Their team has given Smith House an updated look and, because of them, we are able to provide our residents with a warmer, more inviting place to call home. It is because of community partners like AFL that the children of South Carolina are so well cared for.”

Pendleton Place Children’s Shelter is a place of safety and comfort for children who have been affected by abuse, neglect or abandonment. Pendleton Place provides food, clothing, mental health services, on-site medical care and more to help hurt children begin the healing process. Pendleton Place also operates a long-term group home for teen girls ages 15-21, called Smith House. Smith House is designed to prepare residents for successful independent living after foster care.
