AFL Announces 2011-2012 Naruse Scholarship Recipient

AFL presented the 2011 - 2012 Naruse Scholarship Award last month to Sean Fitzgerald, son of Joe Fitzgerald, Engineering Software Manager for AFL’s Test and Inspection Division located in Lowell, MA. Sean is a graduating senior of Bishop Brady High School where he is ranked third in his class. With a GPA of 5.37, Sean still found time to be the Ski Team Captain, Track and Field Captain, and Varsity Soccer Goalie. In his spare time, Sean enjoys riding his bike and listening to music of all genres. Outside of Mathematics and Engineering, Sean has a passion for foreign languages, having taken Latin during high school and planning to learn Chinese and Italian in college.

As an Eagle Scout in Troop 88, Sean’s project was to plan and supervise the building of fitness stations for the playground of Beaver Meadow, a local public elementary school. He finished the project last summer before school started. The scope of the project included a ¼ mile fitness trail with a trail sign and four stations: a sit-up platform, stump jump, parallel bars, and balance beam. Sean said it took over 450 volunteer hours to build and “will give Beaver Meadow School and the surrounding community a place outside to gather, play and stay fit.”

Sean is attending the University of Notre Dame next year where he will major in Aerospace Engineering. He plans to participate in Naval ROTC and hopes to be commissioned as an officer in the Navy when he graduates.
“My family has always played a very supportive role in my life,” said Sean. “I have developed so much due to their encouragement and guidance.”
Administered by the Center for Scholarship Administration located in Greenville, South Carolina, AFL’s Naruse Scholarship is awarded to eligible senior high school students of full time US-based AFL employees with a minimum of one year of service. The amount of the scholarship is up to $2,000 per year with a cap of $8,000 per student over a four-year period. The award may be applied to the cost of tuition, room and board, fees, books and supplies.
