Doug Hoffman

Director of Environment Health and Safety

"AFL has an impressive EHS track record, one that is the result of the entire team at AFL—not just the EHS group. We’ve been able to make positive changes that impact both the environment and business results."

Doug Hoffman is director of environment health and safety and has served in this capacity since 2004. Doug provides leadership, mentoring and direction for AFL’s global EHS team, sets the strategic vision and direction for the company’s EHS programs and ensures consistent application of AFL’s corporate EHS policies and standards. Simply stated, Doug leads AFL’s program to develop processes and procedures for keeping people safe and ensuring the company is sound from an environmental stewardship perspective.

Doug oversees all EHS-related activity for AFL’s manufacturing facilities in Duncan, South Carolina; Monterrey, Mexico; Belmont, New Hampshire; North Grafton, Massachusetts; Swindon, United Kingdom; Mönchengladbach, Germany; and Melbourne, Australia. AFL is ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certified in all of its facilities. Most importantly, the EHS team at AFL has developed programs to develop, drive and sustain a strong, global safety culture.

At AFL, EHS is a key component of the company’s day-to-day business practices. EHS is fully integrated into business plans and individual project plans. This strong focus on safety, supplemented by a wide variety of training programs, has resulted in reduced injury rates across the company’s locations.

As director of EHS, Doug has also implemented environmental stewardship initiatives aimed to reduce energy use. Fujikura, AFL’s parent company, has been a global leader in environmental stewardship and has supported aggressive programs at AFL that have been particularly impactful to natural gas and electricity consumption.

With over three decades of experience, Doug is well versed in all aspects of environment health and safety. He began his career as an industrial engineer with Alcoa at the company’s Warrick, Indiana, aluminum plant. He progressed into operations management, then into safety and training leadership positions. In 2001, Doug was selected to assume EHS leadership for AFL, then a joint venture between Alcoa and Fujikura.

Doug is a graduate of West Virginia University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. The Institute for Safety & Health Management has recognized Doug as a Certified Safety & Health Manager (#1740).
