Matsuhiro Miyamoto

Vice President of Technology and
General Manager of AFL’s R&D Center

"At AFL, we are developing new technologies now that will have a major impact in the future. I enjoy being part of an organization that is focused on innovation and growth."

Matsuhiro Miyamoto serves as vice president of Technology and general manager of AFL’s R&D Center. Miyamoto was appointed to this position in 2010, and is responsible for leading development of new products, new applications, and new vertical markets for AFL.

Miyamoto began his career with Fujikura in 1978 working in the company’s telecommunications R&D department. Within the R&D department, Miyamoto developed first-hand experience in key technologies including optical fiber performance, transmission characteristics and cabling design for access networks and submarine applications. He served in a variety of promotional roles before being selected to serve as general manager for the Telecommunication Cable Department of Fujikura’s R&D Center in 1997.

In addition to his work in R&D at Fujikura, Miyamoto held a variety of positions within the optical fiber and cable production divisions, including service as general manager of two divisions—production engineering and Suzuka optical fiber production—as well as manager of Fujikura’s business planning division. In 2006, Miyamoto was appointed managing director of Fujikura Technology of Singapore leading the R&D department of the optical component division. In 2008, he was promoted to general manager of the company’s optical cable system R&D Center.

Over his 30+ career with Fujikura and AFL, Miyamoto has been involved in the very beginnings of the fiber optic industry. He has been a key contributor to building the fiber optic business from small experimental R&D projects into a business now generating tens of millions of dollars annually and continuing to grow. His technical expertise spans from fiber to cable and then to components and systems. His R&D experience is further complemented by his proven track record in mass production management.

Miyamoto earned his Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from Nagoya Institute of Technology. He also holds a Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology. In South Carolina, Miyamoto is actively involved in the Japan America Association of South Carolina.
