Engineering Services

AFL has the capability to provide custom engineering services for special splicing or fiber preparation applications. These services may include custom hardware or software design, and process improvement consultation. Services may also include advanced splicer training and maintenance service agreements. 

If your company is developing a new optical component and/or requires a critical splice, AFL may be able to fabricate spliced components, such as dissimilar fiber splicing, ball lens, tapers, TEC, combiners, and MFAs to help accelerate your time to market.  Or we can consider rent equipment time for the LZM100 so you can conduct experimental research & development.

Optimization Services

With the constant introduction of new fiber types and the mixing of fiber types in opto-electronic devices such as optical amplifiers and sensors, splicer optimization is essential in minimizing splice loss and keeping splices physically robust. AFL provides an optimization service to determine the optimal settings for any combination of fiber types in any of our splicers.
 
This process involves changing over 50 splicer machine parameters, ranging from splicer arc power to fiber movement rate. These parameters change significantly with fiber characteristics such as fiber diameter, refractive index profile, and dopant composition.
 
In the Fujikura FSM100 and Fujikura LZM100 machines, optimization plays an important role in maximizing the benefits of sweep arc technology, which minimizes the effects of differences in mode field diameters in a pair of fibers, thereby minimizing splice loss.
 
Since splicers also include loss estimation functions, a separate loss estimation optimization is performed to maximize the accuracy of the loss estimation function on the machine to provide the most accurate splice loss readings. All of the parameters can be easily downloaded into a fusion splicer once complete.

Field Splicing Services

In the Fujikura 70S and Fujikura 70R machines, optimization can often minimize splice loss for non-standard fiber combinations not found in the existing splice mode menu.

Since splicers also include loss estimation functions, a separate loss estimation optimization is performed to maximize the accuracy of the loss estimation function on the machine to provide the most accurate splice loss readings. All of the parameters can be easily downloaded into a fusion splicer once complete.
