As demand for power continues to rise at an alarming rate, utilities are forced to increase electrical loads on their existing lines. Most currently used transmission circuits have been designed to operate at only 93°C or less. ACSR, the most commonly used conductor, was unable to handle the higher temperatures. In addition, increasing de-regulation pressures, rising construction costs and right of way scarcity, spurred the development of the ACSS and ACSS/TW conductors, a lower cost alternative. Instead of building new transmission lines, new ACSS and ACSS/TW conductors can replace existing ACSR conductors, allowing utilities to increase energy output up to 40 percent.
However, the increased power from ACSS and ACSS/TW conductors elevates temperatures and workloads, putting strain on standard compression products and other accessories. In response, AFL developed the HiTemp Product Line, consisting of compression and motion control accessories, pulling grips and high temperature compounds.
