Ellen Hines Smith Girls' Home Recipient of $5,000 Fujikura Foundation Grant

3/22/2011

Spartanburg, SC – AFL announces that the Ellen Hines Smith Girls' Home (EHSGH) is the recipient of a $5,000 Fujikura Foundation Grant to support the after-school and summer programs for young girls at EHSGH. Keeping the girls engaged with activities and learning opportunities are an important part of their success. The after-school and summer programs will provide opportunities for the girls to be engaged in activities that promote personal growth, continued learning and a healthy lifestyle.

Tony Payne, Director of Development of Ellen Hines Smith Girls' Home, expressed his appreciation on behalf of the Board and Staff: "This grant will enable us to expose the girls to opportunities and activities that are sure to inspire them toward education and career goals they will enjoy, create outlets that serve as healthy coping mechanisms, and increase their physical activity. We appreciate the generosity of AFL and the Fujikura Foundation."

Through these programs, girls who would otherwise have no opportunity, can experience a wide range of off-campus, culturally-enriching activities. These activities include: trips to the zoo, visiting museums, attending sporting events, visits to the library, attending a play, among others.

"On behalf of AFL and the Fujikura Foundation, we are honored to be a part of this cause, and consequently contributing to the development of our future generations," said Corie Culp, Community Relations Manager for AFL.

For over four decades, the Ellen Hines Smith Girls' Home has provided care for young girls who are victims of abuse and/or neglect.
