AFL Presents Grant to mediationplus

3/29/2012

AFL announces that mediationplus is the recipient of a $1,500 (£945-35) grant that will support the 5-18 Counseling Project. Margaret Harman, HR and EHS Manager of AFL Swindon, presented the cheque to Jeni Burchell, CEO of mediationplus.

Margaret Harman said: “On behalf of AFL and the Community Outreach Program, we are delighted to be able to help fund mediationplus. They do an excellent job supporting separating and divorcing parents, giving priority to children’s needs as well as to those without children.”

The grant will support services for children between the ages of five and 18 who have been significantly affected by the divorce or separation of their parents. When couples separate the impact on children can be very traumatic, affecting their emotional, psychological and social well-being. Children may be fearful and struggling to understand and cope with their emotions, which if not addressed, will negatively impact their behaviour and sense of self-worth, causing problems not only within the home but also at school and sometimes in the wider community.

mediationplus focuses on three key areas: to work directly with children and young people to support them in coping with the changes brought about by their parents’ separation and divorce; to work in the community to resolve non-legal disputes between neighbours through reaching agreement; and lastly, to increase other professionals’ knowledge and general awareness of the issues involved in relationship breakdown and the particular role of mediation and child counselling.

Jeni Burchell said: “We would not be able to carry on making a difference to our local community without the support we are given by businesses such as AFL. We are so grateful.”
