AFL Volunteers Partner with GCRD and TreesGreenville on the Swamp Rabbit Trail

On Saturday, March 3, fourteen AFL associates together with family and friends joined with TreesGreenville, an organization whose mission is plant, promote and protect trees in Greenville County, to plant trees along the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail (SRT) in Northern Greenville County. A partnership between the cities of Greenville and Travelers Rest and Greenville County, the SRT is 17.5 miles of walking/biking trail that runs along the Reedy River.
In conjunction with the Greenville County Recreation District (GCRD), 22 crepe myrtles were planted directly along the trail. With more than 30 volunteers, including those from GCRD and TreesGreenville, each tree was firmly planted, mulched and “zipped” with a water bag. In addition, the shoulder of the trail was lined with mulch, beautifying the surrounding area.
“AFL’s Community Outreach Program encourages our associates to gather with friends and family and provide a service back to our neighbors,” explained Corie Culp, community relations manager for AFL. “Volunteering on the Swamp Rabbit Trail is an honor. These efforts will be visible for years to come - not only by ourselves but mostly by those who travel that portion of the trail frequently.”
Saturday’s tree planting is a part of AFL’s Community Outreach Program called Take Root, which supports tree plantings internationally where AFL has locations. AFL has a goal in this initiative to plant 12,000 trees over the course of five years (by 2015).
