South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics Foundation Recipient of AFL Grant

AFL announces that the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (SC GSSM) Foundation is the recipient of a $6,000 AFL grant that will support the Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI) during the summer of 2012. SPRI gives SC high school students the opportunity to gain real-world scientific research experience in professional environments, preparing them as future leaders in South Carolina’s knowledge-based economy.

Kim Bowman, CEO of the SC GSSM Foundation, expressed her appreciation: “This grant will enable us to immerse academically talented high school students in hands-on collaboration with professional scientists in university and corporate lab research. The experience teaches them to delve into emerging fields of science and inspires them to pursue careers in these fields.”

GSSM students pay no fees to participate in SPRI, as the program is a graduation requirement. Funds for this grant support student housing, meals, tuition fees for students conducting research in university settings, supplies and residence hall counselors.

“The SPRI program engages students in various fields of science and technology and immerses them in real-world research,” said Corie Culp, community relations manager for AFL. “The results are significant! On behalf of AFL, we are honored to support the SC GSSM and our future leaders.”

The GSSM Foundation supports the mission of the SC Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics by giving voice to its needs, providing supplemental funds to augment its programs and informing the public as to its accomplishments and contributions to the quality of life and economic prosperity of South Carolina.
