Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group Receives Grant from AFL Community Outreach Program

AFL, of Swindon, presented a cheque for $3,000 (£1,890-72) to the Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group in support of the Speech and Language Therapy Group. The grant is part of AFL’s Community Outreach Program that helps charities in the local area.

AFL’s HR and EHS Manager, Margaret Harman said: “On behalf of AFL and the Community Outreach Program, we are pleased to continue supporting the Swindon Down’s Syndrome group as the charity is a tremendous asset to our community. We applaud their efforts to provide an opportunity to help young children improve their communication skills and develop confidence.”

Those with Down’s syndrome enjoy local clubs and groups as much as anyone else, but communication needs can very often be the major barrier to accessing them. These communication barriers can be hard work for both the person trying to speak and the one trying to listen and understand. Frustration often leads to giving up altogether. By offering groups from an early age and involving parents and caretakers, children with Down’s syndrome receive the best possible chance to reach their potential and in return give back to the local community by becoming an active participant.

Swindon’s Down’s Syndrome Group’s Treasurer, Kim West said: “The Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group have a commitment to ensuring that the service will continue to be provided for as long as there are children/young people in need. Our parents are very often juggling looking after their child with a disability as well as other children, a full time job, home commitments and fundraising for the group. We are so grateful for the regular support we are given by AFL and appreciate everything they have done for us”.

The Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group aims to support all those with an interest in Down's syndrome in the SN postcode area starting right from the time that a parent first finds out that they are going to have a baby with Down's syndrome. The Group offers personal support, a new parent pack containing basic information about Down's syndrome, local and national support systems and a small gift for the baby.
