AFL Expands Loose Tube Cable Product Family for Industrial Environments

Spartanburg, SC – AFL expanded its loose tube cable family to include designs qualified for use in industrial environments. The new cables include the Gel-Free Extreme Low Temp LSZH Double Jacket I/O Loose Tube Cable, the Listed Gel-Free LSZH Loose Tube Cable and the XLPO LSZH Gel-Free I/O Loose Tube Cable. Utilizing the latest in dry water blocking technology, these new gel-free cables now feature fiber counts up to 288 in listed-cable solutions.

“Network needs in heavy industrial applications require robust optical cable solutions that are designed around the harsh conditions commonly found in these environments,” commented Craig Stratton, business development manager for AFL. “Abusive mechanical loads, extreme temperatures and chemical exposure are but a few of the considerations to keep in mind when selecting optical cable for an industrial installation. AFL’s new harsh environment loose tube cables provide the durability needed to support critical communications infrastructure in these types of environments.”

The outer jacket of the new cables consists of a flame retardant, low smoke, zero halogen material that meets the stringent requirements of IEEE 1202 vertical flame propagation test and UL 1685 limited smoke generation test. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations, the cables also feature an aluminum interlock armoring option for installation in exposed areas.

With the new design, installation can be achieved in cable trays with direct exposure to sunlight, oils and chemicals commonly found in industrial settings like petrochemical processing plants, refineries, wastewater treatment facilities, subway tunnels, mines and factory floor environments. The cables meet the requirements of NFPA 130 and NFPA 502 which are the standards for fixed guideway transit systems, road tunnels and bridges. Additionally, AFL’s product family includes general purpose, riser and plenum cables in accordance with the requirements of the National Electrical Code.

AFL’s robust fiber optic cable line consists of optical ground wire, ADSS, Skywrap®, enterprise and specialty cables. For more information about AFL, its products and services, visit
