Summary

Voice/Data Cabling Infrastructure Installation for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Middle SchoolAFL participated in a year-and-a-half long middle school renovation project in Charlotte, NC, which included replacement of the entire voice/data cabling infrastructure, a new CATV distribution system and cabling of a new 10-classroom science building addition.

Challenge

This multi-phase construction project occurred while students attended classes on the campus. Importance was placed on keeping existing systems operational while slowly transitioning to the new infrastructure. Student safety was also top priority. AFL installed cabling for voice/data, WAP and TV locations to 42 areas including classrooms, offices, the media center, gymnasium and cafeteria/multipurpose room during a multi-phased construction project. This required extensive copper, fiber and coaxial backbone cabling to seven completely refreshed data rooms.

Solution

AFL worked hand-in-hand with the general contractor, electrical contractor, architect, design team and CMS IT project management staff to closely coordinate the installation effort. Additionally, AFL implemented temporary measures to ensure the continuous operation of the school’s voice/data network and closed-circuit television system. This included installing temporary backbone cabling, immediate break fixes and continuous monitoring of construction activities in and around primary cabling pathways.

Results

Students were able to continue learning throughout the project with minimal disruption to their routine. They are now able to study in new state-of-the art science learning environment and utilize the new closed-circuit TV system to learn in a fun and creative manner.
