AFL’s Outreach in the Upstate Expands with New Community Advisory Board Members

9/20/2011

Spartanburg, SC – To further extend its reach in the community, AFL hosted its semi-annual Community Advisory Board meeting on September 16, providing information on AFL, its history, and its role in the community – both past and present. AFL’s first Advisory Board was initiated in 2005 with the goal of connecting with our communities in order to help guide social and financial resources.

AFL’s Advisory Board consists of five community leaders from both Spartanburg and Greenville counties: Carolyn Brooks, Executive Director, Spartanburg County First Steps; David Cordeau, President and CEO, Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce; Ben Haskew, President and CEO, Greenville Chamber of Commerce; Chris Steed, President of United Way of the Piedmont; and Pam Wessel, Senior Account Executive, Immedion, and Board President of Greenville Family Partnership.

Formed to develop ties within the non-profit community, the Board also provides information that helps with discernment of local community priorities. Additionally, the Board assists with soliciting suggestions from local civic, government and business leaders about how to better deploy AFL employee volunteers and financial resources to help improve the Spartanburg and Greenville communities.

“By gaining an understanding of our community and what the true needs are, AFL becomes a more effective corporate citizen, designating financial and social resources to the areas that need it most,” stated Corie Culp, Public Relations Manager for AFL. “Issues discussed during the meeting are ones that need our attention. With our support, we feel confident that we are building a stronger community.”

AFL honored four previous Board members last month.. Past members include Scott Turner, Superintendent, District Five Schools; Wanda Fowler, Executive Director, Middle Tyger Community Center; Kathy Dunleavy, President and CEO, United Way of the Piedmont; and Mary Thomas, Vice President, Spartanburg County Foundation. Each previous Board member was presented with a $1,000 check payable to their respective organization.
