AFL Announces 2012 Naruse Scholarship Recipient

AFL presented the 2012-2013 Naruse Scholarship Award to Austin Herbst. A senior at D.W. Daniel High School in Central, South Carolina, Herbst maintained a 4.0 GPA and is in the top three students of his class.

Herbst held numerous leadership positions in high school including serving as President of Relay for Life, Environmental and Junior Academy of Science Clubs. He was senior captain on the varsity basketball team and earned the Army Reserve Scholar Athlete Award. Herbst was also the recipient of the School and Community Award for Excellence, and as part of his work with Beta Club, he raised funds for clean water in Africa. He was also a member of Mu Alpha Theta Club, the mathematics honor society.

Herbst enjoys the sciences, specifically chemistry and biology. He is a published co-author for a research paper titled, “Optical Sensing by Transforming Chromophoric Silver Clusters in DNA Nanoreactors.” Herbst was the recipient of the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship, a merit-based program established in 1988 to recognize the most academically talented high school seniors and encourage these students to attend college in the State. In addition, he was awarded one of 12 spots in the National Scholars Program of the Calhoun Honors College at Clemson University where he will double-major in Biochemistry and Biomaterials Biological Engineering. Herbst’s ultimate goal is to attend medical school to become either a surgeon or research analyst.

The Naruse Scholarship Fund is administered by the Center for Scholarship Administration located in Greenville, South Carolina. Rising seniors of AFL associates are eligible for up to $2,000 per year, with a cap of $8,000 per student per year over a four-year period. Austin Herbst is the son of Brian Herbst, Business Development Manager-Specialty Cables at AFL. The award is applied to the cost of tuition, room and board, fees, books and supplies.
