AFL Provides Sweat Equity to Hope Remains Youth Ranch

3/25/2013

Hope Remains Youth RanchSpartanburg, SC – Sweat rolled down the faces of AFL associates as they rebuilt fences, gathered debris, stocked stables and revitalized the new location for Hope Remains Youth Ranch. In further support of the nonprofit organization, AFL volunteers not only donated cleaning supplies, wheelbarrels and rakes, but also presented a $3,000 grant made possible by AFL’s Community Outreach Program to help fund children’s therapy sessions at Hope Remains.

Through equine-assisted therapy, youth are given an opportunity to improve their self-confidence and build positive relationships while learning to feed, nurture and ride horses. Melanie Watt, founder and executive director for Hope Remains, favors this type of therapy because horses can sense a person’s mood, encouraging children and youth to change negative attitudes to “horse-friendly” attitudes.

Opening this summer, the new ranch will be a locus for hope and second chances, helping children and troubled teens re-channel their negative emotions into constructive behaviors. With experiential learning, character education, counseling, mentoring and equine-assisted learning, Hope Remains tackles important emotional issues, including depression, emotional hurting and anger.

“Awarding grants is only one aspect of AFL’s Community Outreach Program. It also offers AFL associates the opportunity to get involved in our community and witness the improvements we can make,” said Corie Culp, community relations manager for AFL. “We were inspired by Hope Remains Youth Ranch and support their passion for helping troubled youth.”
