AFL Blog - Proper Orientation for Stockbridge Dampers

By Steven Kranz, PE

AFL's high efficiency Stockbridge Dampers can work with two orientations -- (1) The small weight can be oriented away from the structure and (2) the small weight can be oriented toward the structure. These dampers are designed to work in both orientations with acceptable performance.

When dampers are installed in tandem, it is recommended that the pair of dampers are installed in the same orientation, either both small weights toward the structure or away from the structure. Other damper placements on the same span or different phases, however, do not need to be installed in the same orientation.

For example, a pair of dampers at Structure 1 should both be installed in the same orientation, but a pair of dampers at mid-span or Structure 2 can be installed with the same or opposite orientation as those installed at Structure 1. The same is true with other phases.

With that said, some customers may want to install all phases in the same orientation for aesthetic purposes, however, this is not required and has no effect on the performance.
