Gender Equality in Australia

Workplace Gender Equality Agency Reporting 2022-2023

AFL Telecommunications Australia Pty Ltd (AFL) is committed to gender equality in employment, and in the workplace, because it aims to achieve equal opportunities and outcomes for everyone, not necessarily outcomes that are the same for everyone.

AFL is an organisation of approximately 160 employees working full time, part time or casual work arrangements. 71% of our full-time employees are male. 60% of our part time employees are female and the gender split is roughly 50/50 for the casual workforce.

Our gender pay gap is 27.3%, compared to 15.7% for our industry sector (Other Professional and Scientific Equipment Manufacture) and 21.7% average for Australian organisations.

The key reason for our gender gap is the disproportionate concentration of men in the top three pay quartiles of the AFL workforce, indicating the employment of more male managers in the organisation, whilst in the bottom quartile there is a disproportionate concentration of women.

Cable manufacturing and product development is a non-traditional occupation for women. Our gender gap will be sustainably addressed by directing our focus to recruiting female operators, technical account managers and communications engineers, who will develop and progress through our organisation.

Actions we are taking to achieve these objectives include ensuring our factory environment, shift patterns and Enterprise Bargaining Agreements are attractive to prospective female operator candidates, undertaking a company wide salary audit, and addressing the gender composition in lower level production roles.
